Lewis Hamilton's Biography
Lewis Carl Hamilton was born on January 7, 1985 in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Hamilton started karting aged eight. When he was ten, he approached McLaren team owner Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony and told him he would drive for McLaren one day.

Hamilton, whose grandfather moved to the UK from Grenada in the 1950s, started his rise to the pinnacle of the sport in karts in 1995 taking top honours in the Masters at Bercy in 2000. A move to single seaters followed in 2001 with Hamilton taking part in the Formula Renault Winter Series finishing fifth overall. 2002 saw Hamilton back in Formula Renault, recording three wins with Manor Motorsport and finishing third in the championship standings.

The championship followed in 2003 – again with Manor Motorsport – and Hamilton was very much into his stride. Wins in the F3 Euroseries before the championship followed in 2005 with ASM. A jump up to GP2 did not daunt Hamilton as he won the title in style from Nelson Piquet Jr with ART Grand Prix.

The McLaren Mercedes squad had Hamilton under its protective wing since the age of 12 and with Juan Pablo Montoya making a sudden move to NASCAR and falling out of favour with the Woking based team, Hamilton’s name was suddenly in the frame for the race seat with the team in 2007.

Lewis Hamilton has won the Canadian Grand Prix to claim his first Formula One victory in only the sixth race of his career.
The 22-year-old Briton started in pole position and led throughout the race as the field fell apart around him.

Crashes led to four interruptions by the safety car but Hamilton held on to finish ahead of Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber and Williams's Alexander Wurz.

World Champion Fernando Alonso had to settle for seventh place.

Lewis with his dad
Hamilton is now eight points ahead of his McLaren team mate Alonso in the drivers' world championship.

He has finished in the top three in every race of his Formula One career and has already sparked speculation that he could go on to win the title in his first season.

Thanks to dad

After the race, Hamilton said: "I've been ready for the win for some time - it was just a matter of where and when.

"I have to dedicate this one to my dad - without him, it wouldn't be possible."

Lewis Hamilton's dad crashes Porsche yards from home !!

Lewis Hamilton's dad yesterday proved it's not all in the genes by spectacularly pranging this £330,000 Porsche.

Anthony Hamilton shunted the 205mph Carrera GT through a hedge and careered into an empty children's play area moments after leaving home.

A shaken Mr Hamilton, 47, who manages the career of his Formula One son, then staggered back to the front door of his luxury house in Tewin, Herts.

Tree surgeon Daniel Winn, 23, said "I was working near his house and saw him leave in the Porsche. He started revving the car really hard and wheel-spinned off. He had the roof down and looked at me before he put his foot down. He roared off and 50 yards down the road lost it on the corner.

Lewis Hamilton and Stirling Moss are to make star appearances at the inaugural 'Double Twelve' motoring festival that is taking place at Brooklands later this year.

The festival, named in honour of the Double Twelve meetings that took place at the Surrey track in the 1930s because 24-hour racing was not allowed, will showcase veteran, vintage and classic cars.

As well as auto-test type competitions, there will be parade laps taking place on the nearby Mercedes-Benz World track - which will include an F1 demonstration by Hamilton.

Hamilton commits to McLaren until 2012

McLaren have announced a five-year extension to their contract with star driver Lewis Hamilton. The new agreement, which starts for 2008, will run up to and including the 2012 season.

The announcement takes the length of McLaren’s relationship with Hamilton to a total of 15 years, believed to be among the longest running associations between a sportsman and a team in motorsport history.

"It’s fantastic for me that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has extended my contract until 2012,” said Hamilton, runner-up in the 2007 drivers’ championship.

Hamilton returns and sets the pace at Jerez

Lewis Hamilton returned to testing duties for the McLaren Mercedes squad today and promptly set the pace around the 4.428km Jerez circuit, despite an off in the morning session. The championship runner-up recorded a best time of 1:19.371s, three-tenths off Nick Heidfeld’s Tuesday best, and completed 73 laps.

Hamilton feels defeat made him stronger

Lewis Hamilton says his near-miss on winning the world championship this year has made him determined to work even harder to triumph in 2008.

The McLaren driver finished the 2007 campaign just one point behind title winner Kimi Raikkonen, having been 12 points ahead of the opposition with just two races to go.

And although disappointed to have missed out on what would have been a rookie championship, Hamilton has conceded that perhaps the loss has made him better prepared for the challenges that face him in the future.

Lewis Hamilton admits Swiss tax benefits !!
Lewis Hamilton has admitted that low taxation is 'also' one of the reasons for his high-profile move to Switzerland.

The 22-year-old rookie has come in for criticism following his decision to move away from Britain, but speaking on ITV's Michael Parkinson show, F1's super-rookie reiterated that the main reason for leaving the country was so that he could try and maintain a 'normal life away from the track'.

"I am quite fed up with talking about Switzerland," he told Parkinson.

"I am just a normal person and this is quite an unreal experience. I've gone literally from nowhere, and I have been leap-frogged into being this superstar. It’s a really weird experience.

"Just the other night I went to a book signing event with my dad and we drove home, got out of the car, and got ambushed by some people that followed us all the way home.

"You sort of worry for a second, 'What do they want?'. And that's becoming more and more usual.

"But I really want to live a normal life if I can, away from things, away from the race track, and I just feel that it is another way to do that."

Hamilton also revealed the depth of the inspiration his brother's experiences have given him during his battles on the track this season.

Nicholas Hamilton has cerebral palsy, and Lewis told Parkinson that the challenges his brother faces help him put into perspective his own life hurdles.

"I have always said that when you have problems, when you think you have a tough life and when you think things are going bad, you just have to think about him," he said.

"He has got certain problems because he is disabled.

"Obviously he can't play football like I can play, he can't ride a bike like I can, he can't drive a go-kart like I can. On the other side he is very, very smart so he beats me in that area.

"But nonetheless he gets up, he tries it and he attacks it one hundred percent, and if he falls he just gets back up and keeps on smiling," he continued.

"I take that fact on to the race track. I have bad races, but it is never that bad, I just have got to keep my head up and keep going.

"I think that is what I learn from him."

Hamilton wins Formula One crown

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton roared into the record books as Formula One's youngest champion when he snatched the title in last lap drama at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old, needing only a fifth place finish in the season-ending race to become Britain's first champion since Damon Hill in 1996, was seconds from failure for the second year in a row as Ferrari rival Felipe Massa swept to victory.

Hamilton's title was the first for Mercedes-powered McLaren since Finland's Mika Hakkinen in 1999.

Massa, the first driver since Ayrton Senna in 1989 to miss out on the title after winning more races than anyone else, led from pole position after a start delayed for 10 minutes by a sudden downpour while the cars were waiting on the grid.

The safety car was then deployed for two laps after a collision that sent Britain's David Coulthard crashing into retirement after 15 seasons in Formula One.

The Scot's Red Bull tangled with the Williams of Kazuki Nakajima and Renault's Nelson Piquet, who was also eliminated from the race.

Hamilton entered the last lap in sixth place after a late shower forced a change to wet weather tyres and saw Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso overtake the McLaren.

With the title disappearing as fast as Massa's Ferrari approached the chequered flag, Hamilton had Toyota's Timo Glock to thank after the German stayed out on dry tyres and was unable to hold on to his fifth place.

Hamilton powered past as the final corner approached.

"Amazing, I can't even get my breath back," said the astonished Briton, who embraced his father and brother before being mobbed by the team.

Massa, Hamilton's sole title rival, won his home race for the second time in three years to chalk up a record 16th constructors' title for the Italian team.

Hamilton, who missed out by a single point to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in Brazil last season, ended the 18-race season one point clear of Massa.

"He scored more points than me, he deserves to win the title," said the disappointed race winner. "I know how to win, I know how to lose.

"This is another day of my life that I'm going to learn a lot from."

At 23 years and 301 days old, Hamilton broke the age record set by former McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard who won the first of his two titles with Renault in Brazil at the age of 24, one month and 27 days.

Alonso took second place in the race, with Raikkonen joining him on the podium to seize third place overall from BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica on race wins.
