The Ritz Ballroom has been the home to Northern Soul venues for many years and the nights are run by my good friend one of the top Northern Soul DJs. Ginger Taylor.
The venue is held on the 3rd Friday of each month and runs from 8:30pm - 1am. Admission is £5 otd.
Its a very popular venue attracting visitors from Lancashire and from Tyneside, as well as those from Yorkshire. There is always a queue outside waiting to go in. You need to be there early to get a car park spot outside or good seats inside. It is one of the few venues where people are already dancing even as you are coming in.
The Ritz Ballroom was originally a cinema, the venue has been a ballroom since 1980 and has been run as a family business since 1988. The present owners have indicated their intention to retire within the next two years (by 2008) and would prefer to sell the property as a going concern, to continue as a ballroom, rather than to developers?? Let's hope that developers don't get their hands on this wonderful venue.
The Ritz has won countless awards as the premier Ballroom in Yorkshire. The fully sprung dance floor is a joy to dance on. The ambience of the venue is warm and inviting with ample seating around three sides of the dance floor, the stage being at the far end of the floor. There is a well-staffed bar just behind the entrance. The car park is small and quickly filled, with overspill parking on the streets nearby.
Music policy is across the board Northern, my mate Ginger Taylor is the resident Dj / Promoter and always has two or three guest Dj's every month to inject that fresh flavour. The floor is never empty and quite often full to capacity with dancers enjoying themselves. The place has a buzz about it that is positively electric and just invites you to go on the floor and dance! It's an absolute must-go venue in my veue.
Directions
From junction 25 on the M62 take the WAKEFIELD ROAD / A644 signposted for BRIGHOUSE / DEWSBURY.
After 1 mile, go through one roundabout. Get in right hand lane and go through lights, bearing right. WAKEFIELD ROAD / A644 becomes HUDDERSFIELD ROAD / A641.
After 0.1 mile, enter next roundabout and take 2nd exit onto BRADFORD ROAD / A641.
The Ritz is in front of you on the left (Tesco is on the opposite side of the road), turn left into the side street.

To Soul music lovers the world over, we often only see a very small part of the life's led by our heroes and heroines,
via their recordings, or when we cheer them from the stage in a live performance. I feel that we often forget that these artists, like us, have a human side to them, far removed from the glitter and adoration heaped upon them by us, and the uphill struggle that took them to become a star name in the first place .
Tommy Hunt is now a household name to most Soul music fans throughout the UK and beyond, via his live performances at Wigan Casino in the 70's and his multitude of great recordings such as " Never love a robin ", " Words can never tell it " [ Dynamo ], " I'll make you happy " [ Capitol ] and " I don't want to lose you " [Atlantic ], but it wasn't always like this ........December 1st his autobiography " Only Human - My Soulful life " written with Jan Warburton, was released through Bankhouse books, and tells in his own words, how he rose through humble beginnings in Pittsburgh USA to become a member of the world famous " Doo - Wop " group The Flamingos, later signing for Florence Greenberg's Scepter / Wand set up, and having a massive hit with " Human " . Having his follow up record upstaged by Dusty Springfield , working with Burt Bacharach / Hal David, Luther Dixon and many more, live appearances at New York's Apollo theatre, with some great tales of his time spent rubbing shoulders with other famous Soul stars, like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, The Shirelles and many more, the desperation of prison, drugs, and his saving grace, the UK's Northern Soul scene, plus the ultimate honour of being inducted into the " Rock and Roll hall of Fame".
Tommy has been on my radio show many times and the stories he told off Mic took hold of everyone in the studio. Now having read the first five chapters of this book in advance, I can confirm that this is a compelling read and having recently chatted at length with Tommy before and after he preformed at my Night Owl Soul Club he tells one hell of a story, with wonderful recall, warmth and humour, which has whetted my appetite to read the rest of his life story in full. An essential purchase, for all soul fans !!
